Bronwyn Denman Addresses the Issue of NAPLAN

Quest Speaker Bronwyn with Robin Arndt who introduced Bronwyn.

Bronwyn talked about NAPLAN. The NAPLAN is a snapshot at what the child is doing and not an assessment for the child.

NAPLAN started in 2003 with science and expanded to literacy and numeracy in 2006. It is multiple choice and until recently was completed with pen and paper. It is used for years 3, 5, 7, 9, which are considered the optimum years to test based on development.

Schools use data to drive their planning. States use the data to understand the needs of schools.

NAPLAN went online in 2017 and is the preferred method according to children who take the test-although Year 3 students still use the pen and paper format. On the online version, if kids answer the question correctly the following question is harder. If the question is answered incorrectly the following question will not be more difficult. The biggest problem regarding the online version is the infrastructure in schools.

NAPLAN is done on a timetable and consequently all computers are required to handle the amount of kids taking the test. Therefore, having the available infrastructure in schools for Naplan to work is imperative and something that needs to be addressed.

In 2018, Year 9 did well, but Years 3, 5, 7 did not do so well. This equates to more money needing to be invested into those years. NAPLAN is open to the public at the Schools Online website.
