Heirisson Happenings

Hello members,

From Treasurer Don,

Happy New Year to all Heirisson members

Our first meeting for the year held on 17 January was very well attended and very enjoyably noisy!  It was great to be able to welcome Past President Sandra Brown back to our midst, and she was in very good form indeed.
As well as our usual guests – Ann Arndt and Bev Burnside, we had visiting Rotarian Tony Yeates from Tarporley Rotary Club in Cheshire England and his wife Angie with us.  Tony and Angie are friends of Ken and the Burnsides, and Tony has visited us on previous trips to Australia.

Guest Speaker for the night was – Dr. Simone Pedrini, School of Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS), Curtin University

Simone specialises in seed technologies applied to native species for reintroduction and restoration. Simone’s research focuses on optimising the native seed supply chain for ecological restoration, from seed collection and production to seed processing, quality testing, dormancy treatment, seed enhancement, and seed use in the field. Simone is a certified ecological restoration practitioner, the chair of the International Network for Seed-Based Restoration (INSR), and a Board advisor for the European Native Seed Producers Association (ENSPA).
Simone highlighted the advantages of establishing native plants from seed rather than from seedlings, and described the research being undertaken to ensure that only viable seeds are being used, and the means by which dormancy (hard seededness) can be reduced, enabling greater germination.   His work also involves looking at seed coatings that can both also increase the ease of sowing and protect the seed from being destroyed once it is sown.  His presentation was very well received with a lot of questions coming from those present.

Resignations

President Bronwyn advised – sadly – that Allan McLean and Richard Nolan has advised their resignations from the Club – both will be missed.  Both have made excellent contributions to Rotary in general and Heirisson Rotary Club in particular, and Bronwyn thanked them for their efforts on the Club’s behalf.  During Richard’s time as a member, we have celebrated the publishing of his excellent book, and he has done a great job in the Youth Directorate since taking over from Allan last year.  Allan’s 18 years membership has been full of highlights, including his work as Chair of District 9455’s National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Committee, and his support for Girrawheen Senior High School as Chair of the School Council and supporter of the Clontarf Academy at the School.

Australia Day Breakfast – Victoria Gardens

Robin Arndt, team leader for this event brief members on what needs to be done in preparation.  The Permit has been obtained (thanks to Keiren Shun) and flyers have been distributed by members of the East Perth Community Group and Ken and Don, corflutes located around poles in the gardens, and Warwick has put up the banner.  Greg, Jim and Don will organise getting the ‘kit’ (barbecues, gazebos, tables and other paraphernalia) there and Maree is busy sorting out the food order.
We are again grateful for the support from John Patton at IGA Royal Street, who will be donating $500 worth of food stuffs.  And …. It seems we have enough volunteers for the day to make the event another great success.  Just a brief reminder – if you are involved you need to be on site at 7.00 am next Thursday 26th January.

‘Eye Contact’ – now timed for Parliament House on 8 March

Ken Mullin received the very welcome news that our ‘Eye Contact’ Exhibition, which has been in storage in Canberra since last August, will be exhibited in Parliament House on 8 March 2023.  The exhibition will be supported by presentations from Parliamentarians, and the head of Homeless Australia.  Ken Mullin and David Motta (Osborne Park RC) will also be in attendance.  Well done Ken for persisting in securing a date!

A visit from Melissa Shao

Melissa was an inbound exchange student who the Club hosted in 2016-2017.  Melissa was selected as the ‘Exchange Student of the Year’ when she was here and her prize of $2,000 will be put towards a return visit to Australia in April 2023.  Melissa will be here for about 6 weeks, and she will be contacting past host parents for accommodation, but there may be a need for others to help.  While she is here, she will be attending Heirisson meetings, and we look forward to learning about her activities since she returned home in 2017, and her plans for the future!  The District will also organise an event while she is here and so watch this space!
