Heirisson Happenings

Hi Folks,

Last Thursday 11th.....
We heard from Qantas Captain Brian Johnson (Rtd) on his professional presentation of the Boeing 737 Max
The Boeing 737 Max crashes and their causes
Capt Brian Johnson (Rtd), President of the Mill Point Rotary Club, drew on his extensive experience flying with the RAAF and Qantas in giving a very interesting presentation, on the causes of the failure of the Boeing 737 Max which resulted in crashes, with total loss of life in Indonesia and Ethiopia.  The problem was that modification made the plane tend to pitch too high after take-off and so software was added to force the nose down in those situation, but insufficient redundancy was put in the sensors, making the plane difficult to handle if the flight deck crew were not aware of the issue.
The failures were:
• Boeing – in a hurry and cut corners in the upgrading of the very successful Boeing 737 to the more powerful 737-Max
• The US regulator – underfunded and short-staffed and allowed too much self-regulation for Boeing, thereby missing key fatal flaws
• The Airlines – in a rush to get the new planes in the air, did not pay sufficient attention to reported problems and there was no updated manual.
• The pilots – as a result of lack of training and with no manual were confronted with problems they could not deal with.
• Pilot culture in some airlines – second officers who could have handled the issue in the air not willing to challenge their superiors.
The failures, which could have/should have been arrested at any of these stages resulted in 384 deaths and $20 bn in costs to Boeing – and legal disputes are on-going.
The Boeing 737 Max has now been reconfigured and is flying safely.

And please don't forget:

Our last meeting of the year – Tuesday 14th December, an evening meeting which will incorporate a six-monthly review of the year to date, will incorporate an Annual General Meeting.  The main agenda items will be the presentation of the Audited Financial Report for 2020-21, and election of office-bearers for 2021-2022 and indicative office-bearers for 2022-23.  A formal notice of meeting has been distributed.  But … in the meantime, please give thought to the role you would like to play in the coming year.

And at the evening meeting on Tues 16th Nov.,

Thank you to those who attended the launch of the 2021 ‘Give a Feed Campaign’ on Tuesday evening.  It was an enjoyable event, and good to hear Andrew Wilkinson, Aaron Pitt and Wayne Smith speak with considerable passion about the need to support those people in our community who go hungry.  They need and deserve our support.

I have attached the official Flyer for this year’s campaign.  As well as purchasing hampers yourselves ($30 ea), please consider purchasing them as Christmas presents, and circulating the Flyer to family and friends so they can contribute.  Those planning to donate can visit https://www.giveafeed.com.au/ and the process is very easy!

Last year, Give a Feed raised over $75,000 for over 3,000 hampers and I am sure we can do better this year!

And here's a pic of President Don presenting Jed Fay of the Homeless Support Group with donated underwear for homeless people through the 'Sox in the City Program.

A very big congratulations to the students of our favourite school, Girrawheen SHS;

Girrawheen is a finalist for WA Secondary School of the Year, which is a great tribute to the hard work and commitment of the School Council and staff at Girrawheen and the achievements of the students in their charge.  The winner for the Award will be decided on 29 November at a ceremony being held at Optus Stadium.  President Don will be attending to cheer ‘our school along’, but unfortunately School Council Chair Allan will not be able to attend due to a medical commitment.    We wish the school the best of luck!

Finally, just a reminder that;
This year's Christmas Party will be held at President Don's Home at 29 Woodsome St., Mt. Lawley.

Dear Heirisson members, partners and friends,

Another year has nearly flown by and it is time again to celebrate our 2021 triumphs and not-so triumphs and enjoy each other’s company over a loooong leisurely barbecue lunch.

So …. You are all invited to our home for lunch starting at 11.30 am, Sunday 28 November.  And to encourage you, there will be a surprise announcement!

Now, as in previous years, this is a team event.  Burnsides and Allan will organise meat, and Don will do hot spuds.  We need a number of people to put their hand up to bring pre-lunch nibbles, salads (nominate what type) and desserts.   I am guessing about 5-6 salads of various types and 3-4 desserts of various types.  We will supply cream and ice-cream for the latter.

We may need some chairs but we can worry about when we know how many people are coming.

Ok, that is all for now, but can you please RSVP by Sunday 21 November so that we can commence the requisite amount of back yard tidying, organising and panicking 😊

Looking forward to having you with us.
