Michelle Grant role is that of Community Fundraising for the RFDS.

The RFDS is available Nationally with each state having its own entity. RFDS WA operates out of the centres of Jandakot, Kalgoorlie, Broome, Meekatharra, and  Port Headland. 5,800 patients a year are transferred, and 15,000 patients seen in remote communities. 290,000 calls a year are received. The service cots $96 million with 80 per cent provided by the Government (State?), and $20 million from fundraising, especially from big corporate sponsors like Rio Tinto. Over 35 pilots who are required to have 10 years experience, and the nurses are required to have midwifery.

The jet planes are currently 16 PC 12. Two new jets PC 24 at $12 million with Rio Tinto funding one. These are capable of landing on small strips.

Medical chest are made available free of charge at Stations, Boats, etc.

Patient transfer is most of the WA RFDS activity. The WA RFDS can call helicopters into service if required via the RAC. Police are used for mental health transfers.

The WA RFDS' priorities are 1 to 3, from critical to urgent, to non-urgent transfer.

The staff are trained through the use of a simulator for 3 weeks before flight for small space and scenarios.

The WA RFDS also goes to ships and oil rigs. Also provides a dental clinic for remote communities.

Passages

Hi Ken and all,

Attended the Rotary launch of Passages' new Edward Street drop-in centre today.  Great facility and staff.

Two issues arose in a brief conversation with Passages Coordinator, Niamh.  One was dental care (see below) and the other stats (I gather they have a similar issue to KDT).

On the first aspect, I understand they have spoken with the Owens, and KDT might be able to assist if a dentist volunteers to help (I’m guessing there may be special professional risk/prophylactic measures issues with Passages client group) but Dick Cook, Peter McKerracher and even Peter Wroth might be able to suggest possibilities.

On the second, under initial expert guidance, I wonder if there might be a possible volunteering opportunity for senior ladies at St Barts, students, retirees or others in the community to assist with data entry/initial analysis (possibly off-site etc).

I wonder if we could invite Niamh (or one of her team) to the next homeless group meeting to discuss needs and opportunities etc, or otherwise meet to get to know a bit more.

At some stage a conversation with Tranby may also be appropriate, as they and St Barts are all dealing with broadly similar issues along an age spectrum.

This area might also offer possibilities for the new Beaufort club’s involvement, as it seems to accord with their strategic areas of strategic focus give the presentation at their charter night last night.

Regards, Warwick

Rotary Foundation Month

The Rotary Foundation is a non-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs.

Rotary Water and Sanitation

With projects running throughout much of the developing world, there are a multitude of opportunities for volunteers to get involved in overseas RAWCS projects.

‘Care for Africa’ in Tanzania, supported by the Rotary Club of South Launceston, provides water wells, a mobile health clinic, health care professionals, scholarships for students, teacher training and education resources. Other projects address contaminated water worldwide, sink bores in Timor Leste, build toilet blocks,in Indonesia, provide water distribution within Philippines and provide sanitary facilities in India. Choose how you want to make a difference and start changing lives today.
