Justine Colyer is the CEO of the Rise Network Inc. The Rise Network is a not for profit organisation that started from humble beginnings and has grown to become a 50 million dollar a year operation with over 150 properties.

In 2014, Justine was awarded the Western Australian Community and Government Award at the Telstra Business Woman’s Awards. Justine has worked in the Government, private, and non-profit sector. Having previously worked in male dominated jobs, it was while working as a Project Manager at a prison that Justine received some very good advice. She was told that she needed to own her own authority. Justine said that this was a turning point for her because she started to earn her job title.

Justine is strong advocate for promoting woman in the workplace. As it stands currently, woman are at a disadvantage in the workplace. The playing field is uneven. Case in point, the top 100 companies on the ASX have far more men than woman on the Board, yet studies have shown Boards with woman on them preform 27% better than without. Although inequality unfortunately still exists in the workplace, addressing the underlying bias and attitudes can bring about much needed change. By providing tools to people to call out certain behaviours the playing field can be levelled and woman can be given the opportunities afforded to male counterparts. Woman need to support woman and to lead by example. It is though opportunity, support, empowerment, and celebrating woman’s achievements that there can be more equality.

Justine’s positive attitude and passion has helped make the Rise Network a formidable force in the community services sector and has drawn attention to the important issue of inequality. Her many achievements highlight the fact that a woman is just as capable as a man and therefore should be treated accordingly.

Although change is slowly happening, the journey to equality needs to be seen through to the end, we need to keep going until woman are treated equally. We can then finally move towards a society that is fair and just.

Rotary vision: To work with the youth of today to build a strong and peaceful world of tomorrow.

“Our boys and girls have greater freedom, exercise greater power, and have more opportunities for both good and evil, than ever before. Even if we fail them, youth will not be neglected, for they are the object of universal attention from all the conflicting ideologies and opinions in the world….How important it is, therefore, that youth’s great possibilities for good be realized and developed!”

Signing of International Students MOU with StudyPerth

Last week a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between StudyPerth and Rotary District 9455 was signed at their offices in Forrest Place.

This milestone event was the culmination of discussions, led by Dr Liz Pattison, for international tertiary students to participate in a Global Leadership Award to foster the ideals of Rotary to students. It will also enrich the Western Australian experience of students coming to Perth to study. A pilot project, led by Project Manager Robert Holloway, has been established involving Rotary Clubs in close proximity to Perth universities to participate in the program.

The MOU was signed by Phil Payne (CEO StudyPerth), Lindsay Dry (DG Rotary District 9455) and Graham Peden (DGE District 9455).

Thank you

SHELTERBOX NOMINATED FOR NOBEL PRIZE

Good evening Governors

I am honoured to advise you ShelterBox has been nominated for the 2018  Nobel Peace Prize, the winner to be announced in October.  Whatever the result, this is an amazing nomination and we are truly honoured. The nomination reflects the incredible work done by the ShelterBox staff and volunteers around the world, and to those who have supported us, especially the many Rotary Clubs and Rotarians.

The nomination is also an implicit recognition of the partnership between ShelterBox and Rotary International.  Two great organisations combining their efforts to provide disaster aid wherever it may be required across our world.  I am reminded that last year we helped 32,000 households, or 160,000 people, who had lost everything through conflict or natural disaster. We responded to world events 24 times in the year and deployed aid to 20 different countries. Rotary groups around the world helped us provide vulnerable people with emergency shelter and aid in almost all of the countries we have worked in affected by natural disaster.  In 2017, we also surpassed the highest number of days ever deployed in one year. This includes 84 ShelterBox Response Team volunteers who deployed for a total of 1,530 days. That’s an average volunteer deployment of 18 days each.

I never underestimate the impact of the support of Rotary International, Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarian has to ShelterBox in achieving our goal of no family without shelter.

As we continue to pursue our goal, we thank each and every one of you for the support given, and make an impassioned plea for that support to continue into the future.  As individual organisations we can make a difference in the world; as a partnership we can do even more.

Thank you.
