Heirisson Happenings

Hello members,

Last meeting we heard from Nicola O'Callaghan from Volunteer Marine Rescue WA , now rebadged as Marine Rescue WA about the structure and workings of just how it happens. It is a large WA Govt organisation of professional and (a very large) group of volunteers who drive rescue boats, provide a 24/7 radio reporting service for people in vessels both recreational as well as commercial fishing vessels who are in distress and general communications such as weather and sea conditions reports

What is very interesting is the use of internet, (the internet of things) that can dovetail into VHF radio communications so that the whole of the WA coast can be covered/monitored by one person. A great talk and as you will know, a service delivered expertly when Don's and my sailing boat the good ship Cracklin Rosie was dismasted off the North West Cape at 2:30am some years ago. A night to remember for your erstwhile President and Captain Jim.

From President Don:

Last Board meeting for 2021-22
The Board meeting held its last meeting for 2021-2022 at President Don’s house on Monday 27 June – a noisy but generally productive event (see photos).  In attendance were the retiring Board, and it was an opportunity to give fulsome thanks to Allan McLean, who is stepping down after 17 years on the Board.  A fantastic effort indeed.  We also thanked Justin Walker for his service on the Board over the last two years, and President Don Burnside, given it was the last Board meeting he chaired.
Maddy Shoebridge who will be joining the Board as President-Elect also attended, with Richard Nolan, who will be joining at Youth Director giving his apology as he was at the airport farewelling daughter Olivia who is returning to university in Canberra.

Socks in the City
Socks collection and delivery for the 2022 winter is underway.  A first batch was delivered to Stacey at Perth Home Support Group recently, and Stacey said they are in high demand.  Another batch has been offered to the Street Chaplains, with future collections going to other agencies such as Homeless Healthcare.

As you can see, this year we chose to record the event so it can be viewed whenever you wish, as a club or individually.  We would like to thank everyone involved in the production of the video, particularly Geoff Oliver, without whose expertise this could not have happened.
