Heirisson Happenings

Guest Speaker – 19 February - Sandra Brown
Our own Sandra gave a very interesting and useful talk about the importance of having all of the essential documents related to succession in place – being an up-to-date will, a legal designated power of attorney, a legal designated power of guardianship and others as required.  Sandra highlighted some of the problems that could occur if this is not all done properly.  One interesting fact was she said it would be important for all documents to be signed and witnessed using the same pen – so that there was not basis for a challenge!

Guest Speaker – 5 March – Erin Hegarty, Managing Director Mama Respond

We welcomed Erin Hegarty to the club for the third time, to update us with progress on Mama Respond’s work in Kenya.  Erin said the school built for children with disabilities – to which Heirisson made a contribution some years ago – is going very well, and making a difference to the lives of the students.  Erin said their work is now moving on from education to health, especially mantal health matters through the formation of ‘Strong Mamas’ being groups of the mothers of children with disabilities to help them develop capacity and address local needs.  This work is proceeding very well.  Further, Mama Respond is now contributing to the refit of established schools with access ways and equipment to enable disabled children to more easily participate in schooling.  Although we cannot contribute to this work as a club, if individual members would like to make a contribution, this can be done via their website as shown here (https://www.mamarespond.org/donate

Rotary at the Hyde Park Fair
Children playing the Snakes and Ladders game.

Rotary was very prominent at the 2025 Hyde Park Fair, with Heirisson combining with other clubs (notably Perth and Osborne Park) having a display stand highlighting our work in addressing homelessness, including some of the Eye Contact Portraits and a range of handouts and other information.  It was a more informative display than last year and many people stopped by for a chat and to find out what we were doing.  At least two of the people we spoke to had experienced homelessness.  We laid out the ‘Snakes and Ladders’ game alongside the display and it was noticeable that quite a lot of families played the game.  Senator Dean Smith MP, who is a keen supporter of Rotary’s efforts in this area also spent some time at the stand.  Most members of the club spent some time manning the display, and it was a good opportunity to meet Rotarians from other clubs who were along ‘Rotary Lane’.  Thanks to all who helped out.

Francesco’s activities

Francesco has had two trips to Busselton recently, returned to school, firstly on 15 and 16 February to help fellow Argentinian RYE student Mine celebrate her birthday, and then he was back there the following weekend to take Mine to her School Ball!  This latter event has required Fran to borrow a suit, in which he looked very dapper.  Unfortunately, the suit was left behind in Busselton, but we gather it is slowly making its way back to its owner.
Basketball is picking up and he was pleased to report that his team had won by 20 points in the game played on 8 March.  Congratulations!

Classic Cars and Coffee
Close to 100 supercars coming to Subiaco's Market Square Gardens this Sunday | PerthNow

Classic Cars and Coffee went well on 2 March.  Thanks to Rick’s assistance the take for Heirisson was $258.  Bronwyn is working on the schedule and it shows Robin Arndt on for 6 July and Sandra Brown on for 1 June.  Thanks again to Justin for the opportunity.

Members Subs...

Thanks to those 8 members who have paid already subs for January to June 2025.  And …. Congratulations to Jim Crossland who after several years of trying managed to get his payment in first, closely followed by Ken and Warwick.  Jim was awarded a bottle of red for his effort and was so chuffed because he's never had red wine before!!
Meanwhile the Treasurer will be looking out for other contributions …..

Ready 4 Adventure, once a popular TV series, is now transforming into a live, interactive event where the best in 4WD, caravanning, camping, boating, and fishing comes to life.  The event will be held at Wanneroo Showgrounds.   We hope to engage as many club members and club friends as we can to manage the car parking for the three days, basically the same as we did for Big Boys Toys a few years back. Club members will be paid a fee which can go to the club (that amount and hours etc are still being finalised). Justin anticipates this to be quite the earner for the club. More information to come.
