Heirisson Happenings

Hello members,

From Treasurer Don,

Meeting Tuesday 4 October 2022

Last Tuesday, we had our second meeting in the new venue and we had 17 people attending, which was great to see, and we had a very enjoyable meeting with a lot of sparkling repartee, particularly from our A/Sergeant Greg Hunter.  We welcomed Jacqueline Baril home from Canada, and our guests Ann Arndt who is recovering well after a hip operation, and Bev Burnside who was able to escape briefly from babysitting.  And Warwick – without a beard!

Guest Speakers  - Alexander Truong and Nevin Soriano

Youth Director Richard Nolan introduced our guest speakers Alexander Truong and Nevin Soriano who presented about their experiences in participating in the 2022 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF).  Both students enjoyed the NYSF very much and talked about how they had been exposed to cutting edge science at places such as UWA and CSIRO, and they had some great slides to show experiments they had been involved in or had been able to see – including of robots, and omni-directional vehicles!  Alexander and Nevin, who are now in Year 12 and considering their options for tertiary studies said NYSF had made them think more widely about what they may like to do.  Their presentations led to some interesting discussion and some words of wisdom from Debbie Fletcher who said they need to look outside expected careers for what else is on offer.  Overall, an excellent experience for the ‘grey hairs or no hairs’ to be inspired about what these young men have in front of them.

Eye Contact in Canberra
Community Services Director Ken Mullin said that the Eye Contact Exhibition is stored safely in Canberra awaiting advice about when it can be shown in Parliament House.  Our main contact, Senator The Honourable Dean Smith MP (and member of RC of Perth) is hopeful it will be shown on 21 November, but that depends on the Parliamentary schedule and availability of space.

Brass on the Grass – new date of Sunday 11 December 2022

Don Burnside has met with EPCG members for some initial planning for this year’s ‘Brass on the Grass’ which has been moved to a new date.  It is likely to be a bigger event that in previous years, and we need to think about what foodstuffs we will offer.  EPCG have said they will provide some people to help out with the event on the day.  More news will be coming …
