Heirisson Happenings

Hello members,

From Treasurer Don,

At our last Meeting on Tuesday November 15 we had the

Launch of ‘Give a Feed’
The 2022 ‘Give a Feed’ Campaign was launched at our last meeting on Tuesday 15 November.  Co-founders Wayne Smith and Aaron Pitt were present, along with Kate O’Hara and Ian de Nazareth from Foodbank.  Kate and Ian talked about the issues of food insecurity in WA, and presented some disturbing data, including that 270,000 Western Australians including 90,000 children do not have enough food on a daily basis.  Wayne talked about the project, which was started by Heirisson in 2012, and since then has resulted in 26,000 Christmas Hampers being distributed to needy people.  Aaron Pitt showed a terrific video which is available on the website (https://www.giveafeed.com.au/).  As shown below, Heirisson has purchased 20 hampers this year (to a value of $600) and currently, the campaign is about half-way to its target of 4,000 hampers ($120,000 donated) for 2022.

Social evening – at CBDC, Next Tuesday 29 November 2022
Given there are three Tuesday’s in November, we will be having a Social Evening at our new venue on Tuesday 29 November – 6.00 pm to whenever.  Our resident troubadour, Rick Fletcher will be bringing his guitar, and sundry other musical equipment and will be treating us to an evening of popular music with an opportunity for club members to join in a format resembling karaoke.  It will be good fun, and so please put in the diary and bring family and friends.

President’s Christmas Function – at Bronwyn’s home, 33b Trafalgar Rd, East Perth – 6.30 pm Saturday 17 December
Bronwyn has invited all members and partners to the Christmas function at her home.  The meal will be a selection of cold meats, salads and desserts of course!  Once she has numbers, she will liaise with everyone to work out who is bringing what.
So …. If you have not done so already, can you please let Bronwyn know if you are attending.  It will be a great evening …

Support for a range of community organisations
The purpose of our regular fundraising activities is to allow us to direct financial support to those organisations working in the areas aligned with Heirisson’s objectives.  To let you know, the Board approved the following donations at the last meeting.
  • $1,500 to the ‘My Home’ Project – being additional funds for fit out of the small homes for homeless women being built at North Fremantle.
  • $1,950 to NYSF – to allow Mehdi Mozafari from GSHS to attend the National Youth Science Forum in January 2023.
  • $1,200 to ‘12 Buckets’ – to allow one at-risk primary school child to be mentored for 12 months.
  • $600 to ‘Give a Feed’ – purchase of 20 Christmas Hampers.
  • $729 to the 2022 Clontarf Academy at GSHS for prizes.
  • ....

Thanks from 12 Buckets
As noted above, we recently donated $1,200 to ‘12 Buckets’, being the cost of mentoring one at-risk primary school child to be mentored for 12 months.  We have received this email from Nikki McKenzie, CEO of ‘12 Buckets’.  We are very excited and appreciative that the Heirisson Rotary Club are once again supporting the mentoring of a child in the 12 Buckets mentoring program.  If you like me to visit again and share an update of everything that’s been happening at 12 Buckets, I would be very happy to do so.  Please pass on our thanks to all the members at Heirisson Rotary Club.

Back to Give a Feed …. Packing Day at Foodbank on 21 November
Our annual Christmas Hamper packing day at Foodbank was held on Monday 21 November with the following stalwarts from Heirisson present – Jim and Jenny Crossland, Ken Mullin, Sharon Jackson, Sheridan Webb, Bob Groves, Debbie Fletcher and Don Burnside present – plus reps from other clubs.  The target was packing 500 hampers in the moring, the pace was fast and furious, and although your correspondent skived off early, it is certain that we achieved this.  Well done Heirisson.

Supporting Shelterbox
ShelterBox is Rotary's official partner in disaster relief. All Rotary Clubs should support ShelterBox because together we make a larger impact in the lives of those facing an emergencyFriday, 9th December 2022 is ShelterBox's Giving Day. This link below (also in the flyer) is setup to recognise the District each donation is coming from:

Here's a Heirisson worker getting ready to fold a length of  'water barrier' that was used on Saturday's 94.5 Milk Carton Regatta at Hillarys marina. Russell, Rick, Justin and Don were also there trying to pinch chocolate milk from Master's Milk (the sponsor)'s van. The barrier belongs to us and will raise about $1,000 for this event in years to come as well as being used for the Duck Derby!!

And finally – another reminder about six-monthly subs
And finally, yet another reminder from our gloomy Treasurer who would like to remind those who have not paid subs for July to December 2022 to please do so as soon as possible.  If you have mislaid the email with the invoice, please contact Don Burnside, and he will be delighted to send it to you again.
