AI (Artificial Intelligence)

AI applications are process of higher intelligence that is being replicated by machines.

It goes back to Alan Turing who spoke of neuro networks. The Turin test is whether  an AI machine can hold half an hour conversation with a  person.

AI was anticipated to be implemented in the 1980s as shown by the film "Space Odyssey" made in 1968 and looking toward 2001. In that film the HAL 9000 computer is running the space ship  and locks out the astronaut.

Yet in 2001 AI seemed to be trapped in problems. In the 1970s AI had too much information and  no common sense. Hence 1974 is referred to the "winter" and for 15 years AI attracted no funding.

In the 1980s expert systems put scheduling in the computer.
Deep Blue played chess against the Russian Master Garry Kasparov and Kasparov
won 3 games and 2 were drawn, even though the computer was vastly superior.
Yet in the rematch in 1997 the games were 3 to 2 and one drawn with the computer winning them IBM retired the computer Deep blue.

Moore's Law is that computer will double their speed every 18 months but that seems to be dropping to 12 months.

Rodney Brooks "Elephants Don't Play Chess" in 1990 made the point of learning from experience.  Brian reinforces pathways of learning from experience so AI growth has followed, as shown with Apple's Siri, Google Home, Echo and Alexa from Amazon.

AI has cracked Speech Recognition and Natural language processing. An AI computer booked a hairdressing appointment for a person 3 months ago. There is Automatic Language Translation by Google with there being these languages currently available in type, 103, in speech, 32, and by camera, 37.

WATSON Computer beat the Quiz champions on the US TV Quiz Show "Jeopardy".

There is facial recognition, used by
Police in the UK for soccer control.
The smart phone camera has AI built in.

Primary Health Care is there on the WebMD and this internet resource will brings the price of medical care down especially significant in the Third World.

There are Robots used in surgery even to micro-surgery. Roberts for Search and rescue. Also for war which is an area for concern.

President's Chatter

"The Heights"

Heirisson has been requested to supply BBQ facilities for a thank you breakfast for residents and friends of "Bey Apartments" at 112 Goderich street East Perth being the focal point of a new mini series on ABC television called "The Heights" which will be screened later in the year.

Breakfast will consist of a BBQ burger and should provide the club with a great fundraising opportunity. We will need many hands to help on the morning of Tuesday 21st August at 7:00am - 8:30am. Preparation will need to commence by 6:00am to be able to carryout the service. Please let Allan McLean know if you can assist on the morning.

The last of the NYSF selection interviews will take place on Saturday with those students that were away when the main selections were conducted at Warwick senior High School on Sat 21st July.

These will be carried out at Greg Hunter's office, 1/77 Hay St, Subiaco WA 6008, and will need a couple of helpers, members who ere present on main selection morning would be ideally suited to assist with these final few students.

Rotary Quote

1958-59 Clifford A. Randall (general law practice), Rotary Club of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

Rotary vision: That it meet the challenge of new needs in new settings in a changing world.

“It is frightfully easy to mistake the speed with which information can be transmitted from one place to another today with the actual and complete act of communicating ….Having seen the picture or having heard the event described almost at the time it happened, we are so often left with questions. We know what has happened but we don’t know why.”
