Hello members,
From President Don:
Rotary at work in Ukraine
Thanks to the efforts of John Stockbridge (RC of Southern Districts) and our own Warwick, we were able to zoom into a meeting with Oksana Tjupa, Charter President of the International Rotary Club of Kyiv (membership 25), Ukraine last Tuesday evening (see attached photos). Her story was inspiring and the Heirisson members present were all very moved by what was being achieved under such horrible circumstances. There are 60 Rotary Clubs in Ukraine, and with the assistance of financial donations from abroad, 400 Rotarians from these Clubs have purchased ambulances, and developed 4 centres (Lviv, Ivanytsya, Zakarpatska and Poltava) to house hundreds of IDPs (internally Displaced Persons) with a aim of having 100 such centres. Clubs have supplied 500 tonnes of chicken and 200 tonnes of other humanitarian aid, and have provided water filters for temporary accommodation and are assisting people in repairing houses. Overall, Oksana said morale remains high, and indeed some people are returning home from Poland.

Social evening at Bronwyn’s house 31 May 2022
Many thanks to Bronwyn and Dai for hosting a very enjoyable social evening in their home on 31 May. Clearly it went very well, as Bronwyn pointed out that – thanks to Dai’s hospitality - the last people to leave had to be shoveled out at 10.30 pm 😊. No other information needs to be shared – as per usual, what happened at the evening stays at the evening! The next such social evening will be on Tuesday 30 August. Details will be provided ahead of time.

Prospects for growing our membership
Thanks to an investment in a Facebook Campaign being managed by Justin, we have had 13 people interested in Rotary, These people are being contacted and invited to attend a meeting. We hope that some if not all find our club sufficiently aligned with their aspirations that they will join us!

WE NEED HEAD AND SHOULDERS PHOTOS PLEASE
As you know, we have a Country and Western theme for our changeover with invitations to go out soon. As part of the celebrations, Sheridan needs everyone to send in a ‘head and shoulders’ photo. There is no need to enquire why Sheridan needs these photos – all will be revealed on Changeover Night!

Thankyou message from Foodbank
‘On behalf of the entire team of Foodbank WA, I would like to thank you and your incredible teams for offering us the support we needed during the most recent COVID wave. From April 2022 till June 2022, we have had close to 80 people from various Rotary clubs who have answered our call for assistance and participated actively in our Warehouse volunteering activities. With your help, we were able to continue to provide meals and service to people in need’.

Mama Respond’s success
Members will recall that Erin Hegarty from Mama Respond spoke to us about their project in Kenya building school facilities for disabled children, and we responded with a sizable donation ($2,000). The work is proceeding apace, and Mama Respond is now the recipient of a Global Grant, plus a grant of $40,000 from the Australian Government. Erin expects the project to be complete later this year, and she has agreed to come to a meeting and provide us with an update.

Reconciliation Walk, 3 June 2022
As shown in the attached photos, DG Dee Buckland, Judy Dinnison and DGB acted as guides for the Walk for Reconciliation in Kaarta Koomba (Kings Park) on Friday 3 June. The weather gods were favourable, so we saw people turn out in droves to take part in what was an exciting, fascinating, and inclusive community event. It was so great to see a sea of yellow NRW shirts and so many smiling faces as everyone moved through the awesome activations. There was at least 4000 people that turned out and that doesn’t include passers-by who joined.

Storage decluttering 11 June 2022
A small but committed band comprising Justin Walker, Jim and Jen Crossland, Russell Lanyon and Don Burnside pent a morning getting rid of a lot of un-needed material from our overcrowded storage at Osborne Park (see photo of Jen at work). Given we now have a much better system for demarcating the Duck Derby Course, the old PVC pipes were deemed redundant (see photo) and have been sent for recycling. Apart from that, there was some usual squabbling between the ‘keepers’ and the ‘chuckers’, but on this occasion, the chuckers prevailed. There is now a lot more room, some useful things have been unearthed, and we may even be able to fit in the stuff currently stored in the Presidential Garage in Mount Lawley 😊.
Jen doesn't look happy but she was very happy to help, it was the moment the pic was taken apparently!!
See y'all next Tuesday!!
Come and hear how Don and Jim were saved from near disaster by the Exmouth Volunteer Marine Rescue team.
Something missing here??
