Last week we heard from our Resident polymath, Ken Mullin who gave another fabulous account, this time on ....
The science and progress being made in developing hydrogen as a fuel. Although the chemistry is simple, and converting hydrogen to energy in a fuel cell just produces water as a by-product, ‘manufacturing’ hydrogen is energy intensive and storage and transport still has challenges. The best option will be in generating ‘green hydrogen’ where the energy required – in the form of electricity – is generated from renewable sources, such as wind and solar. A major disadvantage is that currently there is no infrastructure available to move hydrogen from source to where it can be used, which suggests that co-locating plants generating and using hydrogen will be an early development. Although Ken does not see hydrogen being used in cars for some time, as an addendum, Rod Slater mentioned that any new service station installed on a British Motorway must be able to supply vehicles with conventional fuels (petrol diesel), electricity and hydrogen.

Orientation for NYSF students
The orientation morning for NYSF students from 9455 and 9645 Rotary Divisions was held at Willeton SHS on Sunday morning 5 December, Unfortunately Allan McLean (Chair NYSF District 9455) could not attend, but Richard Nolan, Ken Mullin and Don Burnside attended. Allan had prepared an excellent morning tea which was served by Richard Nolan, and Ken Mullin delivered his excellent presentation on the life and achievements of Alan Turing. The morning was well run by Simon Cubitt (Chair NYSF District 9465), and it was good to catch up with some NYSF alumni such as Prachi Dave and Lozz who will be helping at as ‘staffies’ again through the three week program in January 2022.
