At our last meeting, we had the pleasure of hearing from several guests including, Greg Hebble, the CEO of Foodbank, Wayne Smith, founder of the annual Give a Feed campaign, and Aaron Pitt from Imagination Media Group.
Foodbank is Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation. Nationally, they provide over 67 million meals annually. In Western Australia, Foodbank WA provides 6 million meals a year to those in need. A staggering 4 million people (18% of the population) in this country have little, if any, food security. Foodbank provides breakfasts to thousands of school children each day and helps over 2500 charities nationally.
The Rotary Club of Heirisson has a long-standing relationship with Foodbank WA. The first meeting with Foodbank took place over 10 years ago, since then Heirisson has raised $320,000 and continued to offer support to an organisation that tirelessly works to provide nutritious meals to those in need.
In 2011, our current President, Greg Hunter, was instrumental in starting what was initially called Help Feed a 1000. The campaign name was changed to Give a Feed and it has grown from providing 200 hampers, to providing 2000 hampers per year at a cost of $25 per hamper. The goal for this year is to provide 2500 hampers. Each hamper contains over $75 worth of nutritious food that is purchased, rescued, and donated.
It is coming up to the time of year when individuals and families are starting to think what they are going to do for Christmas. While many people focus on what gifts they need to buy for loved ones, a large portion of the population are focused on something that many of us take for granted, food, and how they are going to be able to feed themselves or their family over the festive season. The Give a Feed Campaign needs community support. It needs volunteers to help make up the hampers, and importantly, it needs people from the community to donate so they can help people who would otherwise go hungry over Christmas.
Please visit the Give a Feed website if you would like to donate to such a worthy campaign.
