Heirisson Happenings

Hi Folks, apols for a late HH due to other secret editor's business but anyway....

Last Thursday 25th.....

Guest Speaker – Maria Moffitt, Destiny Rescue Australia
We heard a powerful and very moving presentation from Maria Moffitt, who works for Destiny Rescue Australia (see https://www.destinyrescue.org.au/) which addresses the truly appalling issue where 40 million people world-wide are enslaved, including over 1 million children, 70 per cent of whom are in the Asia-Pacific region being trapped in sex-slavery.  These children are the focus of Destiny Australia’s work.  The organisation, founded by Australian Tony Kirwan, raises funds in Australia, NZ and USA to enable children to be rescued by dedicated rescue agents, border agents and social workers are on the ground in seven countries. The on-ground work involves in rescue (via covert undercover work, or by raids), reintegration and prevention initiatives, helping free more than 5500 people since 2011.  In Australia, New Zealand and the United States, we also have staff raising awareness and funds to fuel the frontline staff.   Maria invited us to make personal donations, which can be done at  https://www.destinyrescue.org.au/donate/

Congratulations to Ann Arndt PHF
At our Christmas lunch, President Don, on behalf of the Club had great pleasure in awarding Ann Arndt a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of her more than 50 years of generous support and service she has given to Rotary, in partnership with her spouse Life Member Robin Arndt.  Her receipt of the Award was met with loud applause from all present and a dignified response from Ann about how much she had enjoyed her contribution to Rotary and how much she had received in return.  Congratulations Ann!

And from Allan MacLean......

Following last Thursday's meeting, I attended the Education Awards. Sadly GSHS did not win the Secondary School of Year, their teacher Charon Puebla was successful in the Secondary School Teacher of the Year. She is Maths/science teacher and set up STEM Club that we supported with a District Grant of $5,600.00 to equip the Club and this was responsible for school coming 1st & 3rd in recent Solar Car Challenge. The sponsor of that event told me today the GIRRAWHEEN students were very impressive, well behaved, committed and a credit to the school, something he could not say for students from one or two of the private schools participating.
