Heirisson Happenings

Heirisson donates to Mama Respond

Back on the 1st April this year, we were fortunate to have Erin Hegarty, the founder of Mama Respond
(see https://www.mamarespond.org/) as our    Guest Speaker.  Erin began her charity in Kenya to ensure children with disabilities have equal educational opportunities. Her team includes people in Kenya and Australia, working with a disadvantaged school near Nairobi, to provide facilities and equipment for a special needs unit at the school.
Mama Respond’s mission is …
“Improving health for better education”.
We seek to alleviate curable disabilities and treat lifelong disabilities by connecting children to appropriate medical resources. In doing so, we strive to ensure that students with disabilities have equal educational opportunities.  We seek local sponsorship for surgery and treatment while covering overhead costs.
As shown in her presentation, Mama Respond is building and furnishing the new special needs unit, and next year, they will invest the equivalent funding in medical treatment and disability aids.
Her presentation inspired our generous Sergeant to make a significant donation, which was matched from Heirisson's own funds, allowing us to donate $2,000 to Mama Respond’s appeal. Erin thanked us for our donation and said that with our’s and contributions from other Rotary Clubs, they are well on their way to hitting their goal and beginning building. We look forward to hearing more about the work being done by Mama Respond.

Socks in the City

The Karrinyup Club donated four large bags of socks to ‘Socks in the City’, plus some cash donated through the website.  Given we have a lot of socks on hand, and winter is upon us, we have started distributing them to organisations looking after homeless people.  Last Friday, Ken and Don visited Perth Homeless Support Group (PHSG) and handed over two of the bags of socks to Stacey Bell, who works for PHSG (see photo of Ken and Stacey).  We will give the other two bags to the Street Chaplains. Over coming weeks will be seeking other organisations who can make good use of them to improve foot health in homeless people over the winter period.  If you know of an organisation that could use them, please let Ken know.
