Heirisson Happenings

Hello again members, delete my last and replace with this one!!!

From Treasurer Don,

Rory Muddle, Guest Speaker on 5 July 2023
Rory, who is the Head of the Maths Department at Girrawheen Senior High School gave a very interesting talk about Maths Academy at the School.  Heirisson provides the food for the students (between 8 and 16) who attend the Academy after school, and the feedback from the students was clear in that the food is a major attraction.  After Rory made us all do a small mathematical exercise, which befuddled some (no names), he then spoke about the challenges and opportunities facing teaching maths in a school with many disadvantaged students. His passion for lifting the standards of maths in the school was evident, and it was gratifying to learn how beneficial our support is for the Maths Academy.

Emilia Navarria arrives on 26 July 2023!
Our Exchange Student for 2023-2024. Emilia (‘Emi’) Navarria will be arriving at Terminal 1, 1820 on Wednesday 26 July.  We know that Debbie Fletcher, Jacqueline Baril and the Burnsides will be there to greet her, and other members are also welcome to join the greeting party.  Emi will be staying with the Burnsides for the first part of her Exchange, and Don and Bev have been busy making at least one room upstairs properly habitable – fixing the bed, purchasing new blankets and creating space in a rather ancient wardrobe.  Jacqueline and her husband Mark will be showing her around the Perth area on the two days after her arrival, and she will be attending the Orientation Camp being held between Friday 28 July, 2023 and Sunday 30 July.  It is being held  at Point Walter Recreation Camp, 1 Stock Road Bicton.   We are looking forward to having her with us.

Socks in the City
Donations of socks and money for the purchase of socks are still coming in and more are needed as winter sets in thoroughly.  Ken Mullin and Don Burnside dived into the funds on hand, and purchased $718 worth of socks (about 300 pairs) for distribution to Homeless Healthcare, Perth Homeless Support Group and Street Chaplains.  This leaves us with $1,672 in the SITC Account which includes our own and others financial donations.  More donations of socks and $$ are always welcome.

Classic Cars and Coffee
Thanks to Justin, our resident entrepreneur extraordinaire, we are assisting in food sales at the Classic Cars and Coffee events, held on the first Sunday in each month. The takings from food sales, after costs are shared between the Walker family and Heirisson with our share being normally somewhere between $250 and $300 at each event.  It is great fun, and the cars and the people are wonderful.  Rick Fletcher is maintaining the schedule and so please contact him if you need to slot yourself in for a Sunday over coming months.

Changeover Dinner, The Albany Room, Victoria Park Hotel, 6.00 pm, Friday 21 July 2023.
A reminder please to all members who have not yet done so to advise Treasurer Don about your attendance at the Changeover Dinner as in how many are attending and also please transfer $110 per person to the account shown on the invitation sent to you on 12 June 2023.  Currently we have received payments from only eight people, but a lot more people have said they are attending.  And remember – feel free to bring along friends and relations so they can see Heirisson at play!

New trailer cover
Jim Crossland has organised the purchase and installation of a cover for the trailer to enable all-weather cover for the Eye Contact boxes, and anything else that we need to transport.  Well done Jim!  The newly equipped trailer will have its first outing in providing support for the Bicycles for Humanity Margaret River Ride (see below).

Support for the Bicycles for Humanity Margaret River Ride
Justin Walker, Sheridan Webb, Maddy Shoebridge, the Schelfhouts and others are about to embark on the annual ride to raise money for ‘Bicycles for Humanity’ which rehabilitates old bikes for distribution in countries with limited transport opportunities.  The route this year will wind through the south west finishing in Margaret River for a range of fun and fun-raising on 14 and 15 July.  Heirisson has made a donation of $500 and many club members have made individual donations to this great cause.  And Don Burnside has donated his old bike …  We look forward to a full report when the battered remains return to Perth after the event.

‘Eye contact’ exhibition bookings in August
Ken Mullin advised that we have three booking for the Eye Contact exhibition in August, being the City of Canning Library, Kingsley Anglican Church and John Septimus Roe School.  So Ken will be looking for assistance with the bumping in and bumping out of the exhibition for these three showing.

And finally …..
At the meeting on 5 July, members gave generally in fines and the teapot, with $57.11 collected.  However, as has occurred previously there were some stray coins – in this case two 1,000 Rupiah Indonesian coins.  We wonder who has been to Bali recently – anything to say Sheridan?  😊

Here's a couple of pics of our trailer.
